Tasting Notes

Winemaker Tracey Reichow

With its expansive aromas and ripe berry character, this Syrah exudes great charm. The grapes are grown in my small estate vineyard in the Coombsville AVA of Napa Valley, where moderate conditions create rich flavor and texture. After walking the vineyard each day, I hand-select the finest clusters for my signature wine, this estate-grown Syrah.

This vintage strikes an alluring balance between Syrah’s fruitier expression and its distinctive earthy character. Deft tiers of raspberry and blueberry are framed with a complex weave of dried herbs, forest floor, and toasted nutmeg. That’s the beauty of Syrah! This vintage, even in its youth, presents rounded tannins and bold, substantial layers that richly fill the palate.

Vineyard & Vintage

Estate Vineyard, Coombsville, Napa Valley

In 1996, I planted this vineyard, by hand, next to our home in Coombsville. Rocky volcanic and granite soils, light morning fog, and afternoon breezes here create idyllic conditions for the elegant characteristics of Syrah. Ripening occurs at a consistent, moderate pace and the grapes develop bright fruit flavors and peppery characteristics. A New World expression of a Northern Rhone classic.

In 2013, a warm spring with moderate rainfall led to a heat wave in early summer. This set the stage for loose clusters with small berries, indicators of exceptional quality. Despite a generally early harvest in Napa Valley, I allowed the Syrah to hang on the vines well into October, when it reached optimal ripeness.
